Gauja National Park, is located 32km (20 miles) north of Riga between Sigulda and Valmiera, is the country’s biggest. It covers an area of nearly 94km (58 miles) around the River Gauja, it features caves, rocks and dense woods. Sigulda is the main doorway to the ninety thousand hectare conversation project, on the river valley of Gauja. It was created to protect this river valley, the park is home to number of historic towns and buildings as well as wonderful landscape and the vast and varied flora and fauna of the area. Visitors to the area will have an experience of a lifetime in the natures lap. The area has all the beautiful and natural locales to relax. It’s an ideal location for walking, hiking, horse riding, canoeing, biking and boating. Wildlife includes elk, deer, brown bears and wolves. There are special nature trails to introduce walkers to the plants and animals. You name it and you can look forward to enjoy numerous outdoor activities. During winters there is also cross-country skiing and bobsleighing. Furthermore, if you do base yourself in Sigulda, only an hour by train from Riga, you can also avail of the ballooning and bungee jumping facilities in the town. The park has something for everybody here and not a place to be missed during a visit to the country.
